Why these item?
Naniwa Arata #600 grit stone is;
- a medium grit stone (a good middle ground. Not too coarse, not too fine. It creates a very versatile edge when done properly with this kit)
- beginner-friendly (finer-grit stones are less forgiving to sharpen)
- a non-soaking type (No need to soak. Just add or spray water. Always ready for you to use. Perfect for busy people)
- fast-cutting, and
- a good size (lasts for decades unless you are a heavy user)
Atoma #140 grit diamond flattening plate with our detachable custom handle;
- is efficient (It does not get clogged quickly like budget flattening stones)
- is similar in size to standard stones (It should not be small to true stones), and
- kills two birds with one plate (detach the handle and use it as a coarse stone)
Our kangaroo leather benchtop strop
- is the safest style (both your hands are on the blade)
- gives you better control of your blade with both hands
- beginner-friendly (Rest it on the bench. No need to control the holding angle of the strop)
- is tall for knuckle clearance
- is sturdy, and
- is similar in size to regular whetstones
Why no coarse and fine stones?
You can unscrew the detachable handle off the plate and use the #140 diamond plate as a coarse stone when needed. The green polishing compound loaded on the strop is around #8000 grit. It removes the microscopic burr and does a bit of polishing like a fine-grit stone. Fine grit stones require a good level of skills and experience to sharpen, while benchtop strops are more beginner-friendly due to their cushioning effect in the hide when done correctly. If you cannot make a knife edge sharp on this #600 grit stone, you won't be able to make it sharp using a finer grit stone unless the knife is extremely hard or very thick, so master your basic skill with this kit and adventure to finer grit stones when you are ready.
